Bone Grafts - Medford Dentists

Serving Winchester, Somerville, Cambridge, Medford & Boston

An oral bone graft is a an oral surgery procedure where tissue can be taken from other parts of your body and combined with synthetic bone in order to restore bone loss that may have occurred in your jaw. Bone loss can happen if you've lost a tooth or had a tooth extracted. When a tooth is lost, the jaw bone underneath isn't being used anymore, and it can wear away. A bone graft is the ideal procedure to add bone to the jaw in order to strengthen it.

Reasons For a Bone Graft

If our Boston cosmetic dentist, Ryan M. Clancy, DMD, MAGD, LVIF has determined that you need a tooth extraction, he may consult with our oral surgeon to determine if you should have a bone graft as well. After a tooth extraction, the remaining portion of the jaw bone is referred to as a socket. A socket that is left behind without a tooth can atrophy and lose bone density, therefore a bone graft may be done to preserve the integrity of the socket.

A bone graft may also be performed in preparation for dental implants. Implants are performed to replace missing, cracked, chipped, or severely decayed teeth. In order to do this, the implant is placed in the jaw bone and then the crown is connected to the implant via an abutment. There must be enough bone in the jaw for an implant to be placed properly, so a bone graft may be necessary.

Our Boston oral surgeon can take synthetic bone utilize it to add to your existing jaw bone. A bone graft can do the following for you:

  • Add to the density of your jawbone
  • Prevent the collapse of surrounding tissue
  • Help to prepare you for dental implants
