Porcelain veneers are used by our Medford cosmetic dentists to significantly improve the appearance of your smile by correcting common cosmetic dental problems such as teeth that are:
- Stained or discolored, even underneath the enamel
- Fissured, chipped, worn or cracked
- Oddly spaced or gapped
- Crowded or crooked
- Sized and shaped differently than adjacent teeth
If you are experiencing one or more of these problems, you may be an ideal candidate for porcelain veneers.
Porcelain Veneer Considerations
The best candidates for porcelain veneers are unhappy with the appearance of their smile and are prepared to take all necessary steps to improve it. Part of this will include being aware of all of your cosmetic dentistry options, enabling you to make an informed decision about what is best for your smile. During your initial consultation we will evaluate your teeth and inform you of the treatments we feel will best meet your needs.
In addition to being prepared for veneers and informed of your options, you will need to be in generally good physical and oral health. Some issues, such as gum disease will need to be treated prior to placing veneers. Neuromuscular dentistry issues or severe damage to your teeth can also interfere with your candidacy for porcelain veneers. For these issues, TMJ treatment or dental restorations such as dental crowns may be better suited to meet your needs.
Good candidates for porcelain veneers should have realistic expectations as well. Veneers can vastly improve the appearance of your smile, but they must be cared for to ensure long-lasting results. Once veneers are stained or damaged, they will need to be replaced. This should be a consideration prior to having veneers placed. Once your teeth have been prepared for veneers, the treatment is irreversible, meaning the only way to correct damaged veneers is to replace them with another restoration.
Porcelain veneers are a wonderful solution for many of our patients, but are certainly not right for everyone. We will be happy to assess your smile and answer your dental veneer questions during your initial consultation to help you determine if this is the right procedure for you.
