In order to have a thorough understanding of your oral health, it is important to have regular dental appointments twice a year. During these appointments, our Boston dentist will evaluate your teeth, gums, and oral tissue. If our dentist, Ryan M. Clancy, DMD, MAGD, LVIF, discovers an abnormality in your oral tissue that he believes may need further examination, he may have our in-house oral surgeon, Dr. Martins, perform a biopsy.
Biopsies can be used to diagnose unhealthy tissues in the mouth and can help to rule out significant oral conditions or help our Boston oral surgeon to diagnose possible oral problems. At Cosmetic & Esthetic Dentistry, you will benefit from the fact that we have an in-house oral surgeon because you don't have to go to a different location or dentist for your biopsy procedure or oral surgeries.
If you are in need of a biopsy, our dentists can help you today. Dr. Martins is a board-certified periodontist who is dedicated to making your appointments calm and stress-free. Please contact Cosmetic & Esthetic Dentistry today to schedule your appointment by calling us at 781-396-8558.
Types of Biopsies
If our dentist notices an abnormality in your oral tissue, he may request that you get a biopsy in order to rule out serious conditions or to determine if you need treatment. Dr. Martins performs the following types of biopsies:
- Incisional biopsy: A portion of the abnormal tissue is removed for further testing
- Excisional biopsy: The entire abnormal portion of tissue is removed for testing, rather than just a portion of it
Any time there is abnormal oral tissue, a biopsy may be the most accurate form of diagnosis in order to determine what procedures, if any, would help correct your oral health.
Why Get an Oral Biopsy?
A biopsy may be used to properly diagnose and treat the following:
- A sore that has been on your gums for longer than two weeks
- White or red patches on your gums
- Gum ulcers
- Gum swelling that does not go down
- Loose teeth or dentures caused by changes in your gums
- Black lesions on your tongue, gums, or oral tissue
Oral biopsies can be used to diagnose cancerous tissue and determine if you have any other oral diseases or infections. From the biopsy, our dentists will be able to determine if you need further care, antibiotics, or procedures.
